Andean Birding
Logistics:Logistics:-
As I was joining onto the last two weeks of a five week trip already arranged by Magnus through Jonas all accommodation, transport and internal flights had been booked without my involvement.
Sites Visited and Summary:
5th October 2010 – Picked up from the Airport by Jonas’ Andean Birding colleague Charlie Vogts and headed straight out for an afternoon of birding at Papallacta.
Highlights:- Carunculated Caracara, Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Ecuadorian Metailtail, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Stout-billed Cinclodes, Andean Tit-spinetail, Many-striped Canastero, Tawny Antpitta, Paramo Ground-Tyrant, Northern Grass and Mountain Wren.
We then visited the cloud-forest Guango Lodge for the Hummingbird feeders.
Highlights:- Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Sword-billed Hummingbird and Tourmaline Sunangel.
Stayed at the very nice Hotel Sebastian in the Mariscal District of Quito. It was at the Hotel that I met up with Magnus, Eja, Sebbe and Jonas.
6th October 2010 – Internal Flight between Quito and Cuenca.
Cajas National Park
Highlights:- Shining Sunbeam, Violet-throated Metaltail, Tawny Antpitta, Tit-like Dacnis and my bogey bird Giant Conebill.
Drove via Cuenca to Yunguilla.
Arrived at Yunguilla at 16:30 and spent the afternoon birding the valley.
Highlights:- Pacific Parrotlet, Mottled Owl, Pacific Hornero and Line-cheeked Spinetail.
Then drove to San Isabel and stayed at the Hosteria Primaveri.
7th October 2010 – Yunguilla
Highlights:- Ecuadorian Rail, Purple-collared Woodstar, Loja Hummigbird, Pacific Elaenia, Pacific Tawny-crowned Pygmy-Tyrannulet, Plumbeous-backed and Ecuadorian Thrush, Black-lored Yellowthroat and PALE-HEADED BRUSH-FINCH.
Ecuadorian Ground-dove at Hotel.
Drove to Cuenca early afternoon where we checked into the Hotel Crespo. Spent the afternoon relaxing in Cuenca.
8th October 2010 – Left the Hotel at 5am in Cuenca heading towards and along the ‘Loja Road’ stopping along the way.
Ona – quick stop at this location didn’t produce a great deal although an Andean Brocket Deer beside the road just passed this site was a highlight.
Acanana Mountain, Saraguro – drove up to the summit which produced the hoped for Golden-plumed Parakeets flying along the mountainside and Paramo Seedeater, and then birded our way down this excellent wooded Mountain.
Highlights:- Golden-plumed Parakeet, Glowing Puffleg, Rufous and Crescent-faced Antpitta, Ash-coloured Tapaculo, Plain-tailed Wren, Black-headed Hemispingus, Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager, Paramo Seedeater.
Huascapampa – walking up the side of the hill to a hidden clearing (basically a farm field within the forest) produced a brilliant vantage point for viewing a few bird flocks feeding along the clearing edge.
Highlights:- Red-faced Parrot, Rainbow Starfrontlet, Flame-throated Sunangel, Highland Trogon, Red-crested Cotinga, Chusquea Tapaculo, Superciliared and Black-headed Hemispingus.
Drove to Loja where we checked into the Bombuscaro Hotel.
9th October 2010 – En-route to Cerro Tuledo we got caught up in a road closure – the road was in effect one and the direction alternated every ‘hour’ or so. Birding along the roadside produced a few things, mainly ‘Highland’ Hepatic Tanager, Rufous-browed Peppershrike and Bran-coloured Flycatcher.
Drove straight to the summit of Cerro Tuledo, which was covered in a low very wet cloud making birding difficult. Once we’d seen the target species we left the summit and headed lower birding on the way.
Highlights:- Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Neblina Metaltail, Mouse-coloured Thistletail, Buff-lored Tody-flycatcher.
Had lunch in the nearby town of Yangana, where we met up with Wilson (our driver) and the larger vehicle we’d be using for the next few days.
Arrived at Tapichalaca at about two in the afternoon. Plenty of activity at the Hummingbird feeders at the Lodge. Had a couple of hours along the road down from the lodge which produced a good selection of birds including White-capped Tanager and Highland Elaenia – which was a new Ecuadorian species even for Jonas!!
Highlights:- Southern Blue-throated Toucanet, Golden-headed Quetzal, Highland Elaenia, Rufous-tailed Tyrant, Silver-backed and White-capped Tanager.
10th October 2010 – Tapichalaca
Spent the morning on the trails around the lodge, including a few hours along the Jocotoco Trail (with its two specific feeding stations). Three White-throated Quail-doves showed really well at their feeding station, but these were easily outdone at the next feeding station with the bird of the trip (for me anyhow!!) and my main reason to join this trip – JOCOTOCO ANTPITTAS!! As we approached the feeding station one was already waiting for us sat on the paths handrail – a bit zoo-ified but amazing nonetheless. We spent about an hour and a quarter watching two of these huge Antpittas feeding on grubs down to about a foot away!!
Returned to the Lodge for lunch where we were able to watch over the Hummingbird feeders.
Headed back out and birded along the Quebrada Hoade(?) Trail which produced a Rufous-capped Thornbill along with a few other nice species, before returning to the Lodge and birding the Undulated Antpitta Trail behind the lodge. We spent the rest of the day along this trail and stayed out past dusk in the hope of Andean Potoo. No luck with the Potoo but Chestnut-naped Antpitta, Rufous-bellied Nighthawk and Rufous-banded Owl were ample compensation.
Highlights:- White-throated Quail-Dove, Red-billed Parrot, Rufous-banded Owl, Rufous-bellied Nighthawk, Rufous-naped Nightjar, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Rufous-capped Thornbill, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Chestnut-naped and Jocotoco Antpitta, Ocellated Tapaculo, Green-and-black and Barred Fruiteater, Rufous-headed Pygmy-Tyrant and Pale-footed Swallow.
11th October 2010 – Tapichalaca
A rainy and foggy start to the day didn’t stop us heading along the Undulated Antpitta Trail in the hope of seeing the Slate-crowned Antpitta we heard yesterday. This proved successful as the Antpitta showed very well, if a little briefly along the path. We continued along this trail and onto the adjoining Piha Trail where we spent the rest of the morning – a long hard walk in the rain but very productive!!
Returned to the Lodge for lunch before leaving at 2:30pm.
Highlights:- Bearded and Sickle-winged Guan, Southern Blue-throated Toucanet, Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Slate-crowned Antpitta, Dusky Piha, Black-billed Peppershrike, Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager and Flame-faced Tanager.
Travelling to Loja we were delayed at the road works near Yangana again, but this enabled us to pick up Fasciated Wren and Golden-olive Woodpecker.
Then stopped at a small roadside marsh at Vilcabamba (about 40km’s outside Loja), which is a site for Plumbeous Rail. The Rails were heard here but not seen, although a group of Yellow-tailed Orioles were the only ones we saw on the trip.
Highlights:- Plumbeous Rail, Upland and Solitary Sandpiper, Fasciated Wren and Yellow-tailed Oriole.
Arrived at Loja at about 6pm and stayed in the Bombuscaro Hotel again.
12th October 2010 – Left Loja at 5:45am heading to Copalinga, stopping of at the Carlos Mora Carrion Electro Plant on the way where we picked up White-capped Dipper and Yellow-whiskered Bush-tanager.
Arrived at Copalinga Lodge at 7:30am. Excellent Lodge with Cabined accommodation, lots of flowering scrubs around the gardens and excellent feeders overlooked by the dining area which attracted a number of Tanager and Hummingbird species.
After sorting out the cabins we spent a couple of hours around the feeders and gardens, personally spending about an hour photographing a very obliging Buff-tailed Sicklebill, before driving along the road to the Bombuscaro entrance of Podocarpus. The road itself was quite productive but as we entered the National Park the heavens opened and so returned to the lodge, although not before we added Coppery-chested Jacamar to the list.
At 3:30pm we headed back to the Bombuscaro entrance to Podocarpus but only really for one bird, a nesting Amazonian Umbrellabird. As the birding was very slow here we decided to bird along the road again. After an hour or so Jonas received a phone call from the owner of the lodge which sent us diving in the mini-bus and racing back to the lodge – a male Spangled Coquette was feeding along a flowering scrub in the garden – cracking bird and a bit of a speciality of the Lodge.
A small night walk along the entrance road produced a Blackish Nightjar, three Pauraques and a very showy Band-bellied Owl.
Highlights:- White-breasted Parakeet, Band-bellied Owl, Buff-tailed Sicklebill, Grey-chinned Hermit, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Spangled Coquette, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Amazonian Umbrellabird , Lined Antshrike, Golden-faced Tyrannulet, Inca Jay, lots of Tanagers and Euphonias.
13th October 2010 – Watched the feeders at Copalinga during breakfast before setting off for Zamora at 6:50am stopping en-route at a small road-side reeded pool where we got the hoped for Blackish Rail.
We arrived at Zamora Airstrip at about 7:30am and drove onto the (hopefully) abandoned runway. The grass verges of runway were very good for Seed-finch and Seedeaters, and the general area was good for more open-land species.
We returned to Copalinga Lodge at 9:30am and walked one of the trails beyond the cabins and were successful in our search for roosting Blackish Nightjars with two seen, one amazingly well. We watched the feeders again during lunch, adding Guira Tanager to the list. Set off for Yankuam at 1pm, stopping off for provisions at Zamora on the way.
Highlights:- Blackish Rail, Blackish Nightjar, Short-tailed Hawk, Dark-breasted Spinetail, Olive-chested Flycatcher, Guira Tanager, Lesser Seed-finch.
Arrived at the lodge at Yankuam at 3:45pm, basically dropped our stuff off and then went birding along the road of this under visited area.
Just beyond the lodge the road reaches the river which can only be crossed by the manned ferry (not sure what time this is open from and until but we didn’t seem to have any problems crossing at anytime of the day). The birding is excellent along the road passed the river and it wasn’t long before we had our main target species, with five Orange-throated Tanagers in trees above the road. While waiting for the ferry – due to a lorry getting stuck trying to board it – we were able to pick up an Ocellated Poorwill and two Band-bellied Owls. And Greater Fishing Bats were seen over the river as we crossed.
Highlights:- Southern Ocellated Poorwill, Great-billed Woodcreeper, Ecuadorian Tyrannulet, Ornate Flycatcher, Orange-throated Tanager.
14th October 2010 – Yankuam – breakfasted at 5:30am while watching a Grey-breasted Sabrewing visiting flowers in the garden. Then spent all day along the road on the opposite side of the Nangaritza River. This 20 or so kilometre road, through a variety of habitats, was very productive and added quite a few species to the list but did frustrate to with only heard records of Grey-tailed Piha (speciality of the area) and Lanceolated Monklet (becoming a bogey bird of mine!!).
Highlights:- Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Amazonian White-tailed Trogon, Ash-browed Spinetail, Plain-winged Antshrike, Plum-throated Cotinga, Golden-headed Manakin, Black-and-white and Golden-winged Tody-Tyrant, Slaty-capped Shrike Vireo, Dusky-capped Greenlet, Yellow-shouldered and Slate-coloured Grosbeak, Orange-throated Tanager and Red Pileated Finch.
15th October 2010 – Yankuam – Spent the day ‘strolling’ up the ‘hill’ opposite the Lodge. There is a steep footpath (raising about 1 km in elevation) leading to the summit but it was recommended to us to hire a local community guide – both as it is their land and also the footpath can be confusing in places – which we did. This was really hard work for basically two target species – but looking back on it, it was worth it!!! The two targets, Royal Sunangel and Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant were both seen basically at the summit of the mountain as the path plateau’d out. On the return walk (fall!!) down the mountain we saw a ‘White-crowned Manakin’ which Jonas pointed out wasn’t calling like any of the Ecuadorian or Northern Peruvian subspecies – so possibly a new subspecies or even a new species in this very under watched site – recordings were taken so we’ll have to wait and see.
Highlights:- Great Tinamou, Mountain Green Violet-ear, Royal Sunangel, Zimmer’s Antbird, Scale-backed Antbird, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, ‘White-crowned Manakin’, Thrush-like Schiffornis, Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant and Bar-winged Wood Wren.
Travelled to Loja and stayed in the Bombuscaro Hotel again.
Highlights:- Caqueta Seedeater.
16th October 2010 – Set off for Loja airport at 8:15am, where we had Long-tailed Mockingbird and Loja Hummingbird in the car park.
Flight Loja to Quito, arriving at Quito at 11:05.
Drove to Tandayapa Lodge, stopping en-route for some food. Arriving at 2:30pm we spent about an hour and half watching the Hummingbird feeders. As we were leaving, a member of the staff spoke to Jonas and then we were walked round to the side of the main building where the member of staff enticed a cracking Giant Antpitta out with a selection of juicy grubs.
Then drove back along the Tandayapa Valley, birding along the roadside.
Highlights:- Western Emerald, Empress and Green-crowned Brilliant, Buff-tailed Coronet, Brown Inca, Purple-bibbed Whitetip, Violet-tailed Sylph, Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Narino Tapaculo, Giant Antpitta and Beautiful Jay.
Returned to Quito and stayed at the Hotel Sebastian again.
17th October 2010 – As the rest of the group had already visited Paz de las Antpittas earlier on in the trip, I was dropped off in a nearby village to be picked up by Angel while the other continued onto Tandayapa. As Angel was picking me up at 5:30am we had to leave Quito at 3:20am. All went to plan and Angel turned up on time and we drove (with the rest of his extended family) to his reserve in his pick-up truck, arriving at 5:45am. The guided tour lasted about 4 hours, stopping off at ‘feeding stations’ along the way. Got some tremendous views of some brilliant species including Giant, Yellow-bellied and Moustached Antpittas, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Dark-backed Wood-quail and Toucan Barbet. Towards the end of the tour was some Hummingbird Feeders which attracted Empress Brilliants and a male Velvet-purple Coronet. Finishing off with Black-capped Tanager, Orange-breasted Fruiteater and Crimson-rumped Toucanet around Angels farmhouse followed by a delicious late breakfast.
Highlights:- Dark-backed Wood-quail, Western Tawny-bellied Hermit, Empress Brilliant, Velvet-purple Coronet, Toucan Barbet, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Rufous-breasted Antthrush, Giant, Yellow-bellied and Moustached Antpittas, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Olivaceous Piha, Spotted Barbtail, Fawn-breasted and Black-capped Tanager.
A group that had been on the tour were driving back to Bellavista (where the rest of my group had gone), so Angel asked them if they’d give me a lift. On the way back the group took me to a private garden called Alambi – at the bottom of the road to Tandayapa Lodge – containing hummingbird and fruit feeders which added Green-crowned Woodnymph and Lemon-rumped Tanager.
Arrived at Bellavista at 1pm and got Gorgetted Sunangel on the feeders at the entrance. Checked into my room – more like studio appartment!! – with amazing views over the tree tops down the valley. Met up with the others and as they’d been birding the area most of the morning they sent me down to the compost heap on H Trail where a Chestnut-crowned Antpitta and a White-throated Quail-dove showed superbly.
Went birding along the road outside of Bellavista and along the top of Tandayapa Valley at 3pm picking up another cracking Ocellated Tapaculo, five White-capped Parrots and a Crested Quetzal and also hearing a Powerful Woodpecker and Dark-back Wood-quail. A small night walk didn’t produce much other than calling Rufous-bellied Nighthawk and Rufous-banded Owl.
Highlights:- Gorgeted Sunangel, Crested Quetzal, Southern Strong-billed Woodcreeper, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Golden-crowned Flycatcher, Sharpe´s (Sepia-brown) Wren, Brown-capped Vireo, Dusky Bush-Tanager, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager.
18th October 2010 – had breakfast at Bellavista at 5 and left at 5:30am, seeing a female Swallow-tailed Nightjar and a Rufous-bellied Nighthawk along the road below the lodge.
Arrived at Yanacocha at 7:30am and walked the path to the furthest Hummingbird feeders in the hope of Black-breasted Puffleg. Although the target species wasn’t seen (hit and miss at this time of the year) the walk was good for Flowerpiercers, Conebills and Mountain-tanagers, and the Hummingbird Feeders attracted quite a few Hummers including Sapphire-vented and Golden-breasted Puffleg.
Highlights:- Sword-billed Hummingbird, Great Sapphirewing, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Golden-breasted Puffleg, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Tawny-rumped Tyrannulet.
After leaving Yanacocha we headed for Quito, stopping somewhere just outside for lunch where we picked up a Streak-throated Bush-tyrant in a valley below the petrol station. We then went to Combaya Sewage Works on a ‘twitch’. As well as the, hoped for, two White-rumped Sandpipers we also had two Wilson’s Phalarope and a Cliff Swallow at this site that seems to be a bit of a Quito rarity hotspot. Also a pair of Scrub Tanagers and the recent colonists, Tropical Mockingbirds was seen.
Stayed at the Hotel Sebastian again.
19th October 2010 – last breakfast in Ecuador at 6:10am before heading off to the Airport for our 9:20am flight. The flight was delayed for three hours due to fog and so flew home at 12:30pm via Bonaire and Amsterdam. Luckily didn’t miss my connection to Manchester after a run between gates, although Magnus, Eja and Sebbe had missed their connection to Sweden and so had a couple of hours wait till the next flight.
